Microsoft and Openness
(by Andreas Hadjipanayi)

The purpose of this session is to discuss how Microsoft has become more open over time.

The major discussion points during this session are:

  • Microsoft’s contribution in standards and open source.
  • Microsoft’s commitment to listen to customers who want to deploy cool new solutions that combine Microsoft and other technologies.
  • Microsoft’s effort to make the transition to the cloud in an open manner.

Clustering in SQL Server 2008

(by Michael Theodoulou)

More and more organizations are identifying that data has become an integral part of their business. In fact many organizations are realizing that data is their core business providing them with their competitive advantage. As such companies are looking for ways to shield themselves from possible data-loss by implementing High-Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions to ensure business continuity in addition to business processes.

As a mature database product, SQL Server offers several methods for HA and DR to maximize application uptime, data availability and reduce data-loss. One of the technologies used is failover clustering that provides a method for ensuring system availability in the event of hardware loss or even natural disaster. With the capability for geographical dispersed clusters and combined with automatic failover capability and seamless application redirection, SQL Server clustering ensures that business can continue to run their production systems without interruption even with the loss of a datacenter.

The session will cover installation of a SQL Server 2008 clustered instance:

  • Overview of SQL Server clustering. What it is and what it is not.
  • Possible configurations of clustered instances.
  • Requirements for Windows cluster.
  • Requirements for SQL Server 2008 cluster.
  • Domain & network requirements.
  • Possible issues and troubleshooting steps for AD environments.
  • Installation demo.
